Ready, set – go! The leaderboard is the place to be this half-term.
Remember Robbie Williams’s old tour bus being parked up here to launch this homeless charity back in 2017? You won’t be surprised that they’re back – with Midsummer Place’s full support once again.
The Boulevard Bed Race is all about choosing a duvet and matching pillowcase to put on the bed as fast as you can – together with the same number of toys as your age. As you can imagine, this game is reserved for under 12s!
Formerly The Bus Shelter MK, the charity is relaunching this week as The Shelter MK.
After retiring the double-decker bus back in 2021 because of social distancing, the shelter got creative and had ‘sleeping pods’ made within a converted shipping container.
All of this week, you can take a look inside a life-sized mock ‘pod’ – and get the full story by watching a special video, kindly filmed and edited by media production students at MK College.
It promises to be a fun week, with lots to learn about along the way.
Changing lives for the better
The team at The Shelter MK has supported an F1 engineer, a music producer, a chef and many more ordinary people, who could be your friend or work colleague.
The charity has nine temporary beds, including seven pods at George House and 12 move-on beds. Residents are known as ‘guests’, and have described the pods as “the difference between hell and heaven” and “somewhere to put my head and call home.”
The charity has helped more than 300 guests turn their lives around. More than just somewhere to sleep, they are given the essentials to help them take steps forward: hot meals, showers, clean clothes, a safe space to rest and recover, and one-to-one support to get back into work and their own home.
Your support makes a difference
The original launch captured the imagination and kind hearts of the MK community, raising more than £40,000 in the first six months through your donations and Midsummer Place’s financial support.
Since then, you’ve donated through Facebook, work fundraisers with your colleagues and with business and corporate gifts.
Thanks to generous volunteers and partners, The Shelter MK has been able to provide hot meals for guests, clean windows, recycled laptops and bikes that help guests find work and get to interviews – and place guests in jobs they can be proud of.
As it costs The Shelter MK £300,000 a year to run and it relies on the generosity of the public, the charity can never have too much support.
At Midsummer Place, we’re honoured to support this wonderful charity once more.
