Students Celebrate National Finals Place Following Inspirational Award Win at Midsummer Place Supported Programme

A group of students from Daubeney Academy in Bedford are celebrating after winning the prestigious Inspire Award at the recent Regional Finals, securing their place at the National Finals in Cardiff.
The team, known as Essential Fidgets, took part in the programme which has been supported locally through trade fairs and events hosted at Midsummer Place Shopping Centre, helping provide young people with opportunities to showcase their ideas, build confidence and develop key life skills.
The Inspire Award recognises teams who demonstrate exceptional resilience, growth and determination throughout the programme, and judges were particularly moved by the remarkable transformation shown by the Daubeney Academy students.
All members of the team are on the SEND register and many had previously faced significant challenges at school, including suspensions and being at risk of exclusion. Since joining the programme, the school has reported dramatic improvements in behaviour, attendance, confidence and self-belief.
The students will now travel to Cardiff to represent the region at the National Finals, competing against teams from across the UK for the national Inspire Award title.
Kirsty McGiff, Marketing Manager at Midsummer Place Shopping Centre, said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to hear about the incredible success of the Essential Fidgets team. Their story is truly inspiring and highlights the life-changing impact these programmes can have on young people when they are given encouragement, opportunity and belief.
“It has been a privilege for Midsummer Place to support the initiative by hosting the trade fairs and helping give students a platform to showcase their talents and ideas. We wish the team the very best of luck at the National Finals in Cardiff.”
Throughout the programme, students were also given opportunities to take part in interviews and promotional activities, helping them gain valuable real-world experience and build confidence for the future.
