Southern White Rhino (Granville)

Rhio

Meet Granville, the Southern White Rhino!

You've discovered Granville, one of the magnificent animals featured in Safari in the City.

Southern white rhinos are among the largest land mammals on Earth and are famous for their enormous size, powerful build and distinctive horns. Despite their tough appearance, they're gentle grazers that spend much of the day eating grass across open plains.

Take a look through the gallery below to learn more about these remarkable animals.

Did You Know?

Despite weighing over 2,000 kilograms, white rhinos can run at speeds of up to 30mph over short distances.

Their excellent sense of smell and hearing help them detect danger, even though their eyesight isn't particularly strong.

The name "white rhino" doesn't actually refer to its colour. It is believed to come from the Dutch word "wijd", meaning "wide", referring to the animal's broad mouth that's perfectly adapted for grazing.

Rhinos are usually peaceful animals but can become very protective if they feel threatened.

Where Do Southern White Rhinos Live?

Southern white rhinos are found in grasslands and savannahs across southern Africa.

Thanks to dedicated conservation programmes, populations have recovered significantly over recent decades, although rhinos still face threats from habitat loss and illegal poaching.
