Safari in the City Butterfly

You've discovered Barbara, one of the most colourful members of our Safari in the City trail!

Butterflies are some of nature's most beautiful creatures, bringing colour, movement and life wherever they go. Their delicate wings and fascinating life cycle make them one of the most loved insects in the world, and they're an important part of keeping our environment healthy.

As you continue your adventure around Midsummer Place, don't forget to look up and experience Wings of Wonder, our spectacular butterfly canopy suspended high above the Boulevard. Featuring more than 250 beautifully crafted butterflies, it's the perfect finishing touch to your Safari in the City experience.

Butterflies begin life as tiny eggs before transforming into caterpillars, then pupae (chrysalises), before finally emerging as beautiful butterflies. This incredible transformation is called metamorphosis.

Although butterflies may appear delicate, many species migrate incredible distances. The Painted Lady butterfly, for example, travels thousands of miles between Africa and Europe.

There are over 17,000 known species of butterflies around the world, each with its own unique colours, patterns and behaviours.

Butterflies can be found across almost every continent, living in gardens, meadows, woodlands and grasslands wherever flowering plants provide food and shelter.

Different species thrive in different environments, making every butterfly you spot a special part of our natural world.

While Woburn Safari Park isn't home to a butterfly house, visitors may spot butterflies in the park's beautiful wildlife garden during the warmer months.
